St. Maximilian Kolbe - August 14 Priest and Martyr (1894-1941) Raymond Kolbe was born on January 8, 1894, in Zdunska Wola, Poland, during the Russian occupation. Today, Bishop Emeritus Christopher Saunders, 76, of Broome was convicted of 13 homosexual offences against two young Indigenous men in Western Australia. A jury in the District Court of Western Australia found Saunders guilty of 12 counts of indecent assault and one count of sexual penetration without consent. The jury acquitted him on six other charges. The offences for which Saunders was convicted occurred between 2008 and 2019, while he was serving as Bishop of Broome. Saunders was also convicted of offences against a second man, including sexual penetration without consent. The jury deliberated for approximately seven hours before returning the verdicts. The Archdiocese of Utrecht has rejected as false rumours that Cardinal Willem Eijk, 73, could have asked Pope Leo XIV during an audience on Monday to accept his early resignation as Archbishop. “These reports are false. He has not offered his resignation,” the archdiocese told the Dutch newspaper Katholiek Nieuwsblad on Wednesday. An archdiocesan spokesman added that there was no basis for such speculation. The audience attracted attention because Eijk has experienced health problems in recent months and didn't attend the consistories in January and June. The archdiocese also provided an update on the cardinal’s health. “It is known that Cardinal Eijk struggled with health problems last winter,” the spokesman said. Worse than Germany: Cardinal Tarcisio Kikuchi of Tokyo has welcomed the Japanese government's plan to promote "understanding of sexual orientation and gender identity", which was approved on 16 June. The plan involves education and "awareness initiatives" in government, schools, and workplaces, as well as measures to combat "discrimination" against homosexuals. Brigitte Stegemann was an 83-year-old great-grandmother and a Christian. On July 10, she died through Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program in Ontario. Diagnosed with terminal Stage IV stomach cancer, Stegemann had wanted to die naturally. But while her granddaughter and longtime legal representative, Brigitte Kranendonk, was away on vacation, medical personnel discussed MAiD with Stegemann. She was subsequently deemed capable of choosing MAiD despite allegedly being unable to answer basic questions about her own family. Canadian Catholic News reported that Kranendonk said her grandmother had originally rejected MAiD but was persuaded to request it during her absence.
