Writing for IlGiornale.it, Nico Spuntoni says Bishop Sanguineti is now in “pole position” for the post following Gambetti’s departure. Other names floated in recent weeks include former papal master of ceremonies Archbishop Guido Marini, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and Cardinal Rolandas Makrickas, Archpriest of the Basilica of St Mary Major. Leo XIV knew Sanguineti before his election to the papacy through Pavia, home to the tomb of St Augustine. The two celebrated a Eucharist together there in February 2024. He received a Catholic funeral at Saint-Roch Church in Paris on October 1. Denis had been seriously ill for about three years. His health collapsed after a routine hernia operation in 2023, during which a surgical mesh implant was placed in his body. He suffered severe pain, lost significant weight and developed debilitating health problems that eventually left him disabled. The implant was later removed, but his health did not recover. He requested euthanasia in Belgium and made his plans publicly known in January.
