In his debates with other scholars or when criticizing the hypocrisy of the Roman clergy, he often used words that were sharp, aggressive, and offensive. He never denied his difficult character, yet he spent his entire life engaged in a relentless spiritual and physical struggle to curb his anger. He himself described his wrath as a constant "enemy." To combat his outbursts and tame his temper, Jerome turned to four main remedies: 1 Intense and ceaseless study. 2 Harsh physical discipline: he would withdraw into solitude and literally beat his chest with a stone. 3 Constant prayer, tears, and fasting.
